Daddy dearest

Good to see it's not just older mums getting stick. The poor old dads come in for some flak too in this article, which reveals why starting out life with a dad older than 45 can - allegedly - be bad news for babies' health. Dr Jin Liang Zhu, from the Danish Epidemiology Science Centre, said: "The risks of older fatherhood can be very profound, and it is not something that people are always aware of." Well, no, I guess not. Scientists have been too busy disparaging older mums to have time for the dads. Still, I don't expect the research will put ageing pop stars and business magnates like Mike Oldfield, Rod Stewart and Rupert Murdoch off fathering more youngsters. And I bet they don't get half as much criticism as mums over 40 do.

Funny that I have a friend with an older husband. Her young son has inherited his heart condition while his much older children from a previous marriage seem to have excaped it. About time some research was done on this although most people probably won't take it into serious consideration. Perhaps that's a question for a poll - would you marry a much older man knowing this?

Sad about your friend's son. Personally, was never one for the much older man - but that was nothing to do with dodgy genetics - and have married (slightly) younger guy. Poor older blokes. Makes them sound like ageing stallions on a farm. Stallions that need to be put out to grass. Not nice.

Welcome to this site. It's based on my personal experiences of becoming a mother a little later in life. If, like me, you waited a while to have children you're in good company. More and more of us are waiting until our late 30s or even 40s to become parents. Some might even say we're fashionably late.
